Hi, nice post. But you forgot to post the full name of the Korafola (kora player): it’s Djeli Moussa Diawara (Djeli means Griot). You can check for his bio on Wikipedia or get more info on the link above.
Djeli Moussa founded this trio and left in 2010 to work solo and start a new trio. He recorded a magic version of Duke Ellington’s Caravan, you can find on SoundCloud or Youtube. He’s working on new tracks for an upcoming album.

Loved the review. Especially the end song and I’m not quite sure why I don’t get it either. In fact there are whole bits of this album that I don’t get and yet like, and i wonder if that’s me being thick.

Thanks Lorraine, Happy memories of both of those tunes. I always loved “Run Baby Run” by the Newbeats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OIGUXnE3rg) but everyone else thought it was too poppy and really uncool…until Paul Weller sampled it on “Up the Dosage”. Not so uncool any more then.

Thanks for the kind words about the review. I do an occasional feature for the site called “IMHO” about under-rated (in my humble..) musicians and Nick Lowe was always on my to do list for that. He’s just moved to the top of the list and the piece should go live in a week or so.

Tickets secured for the Saturday and a weekend in London all sorted (I live 120 miles away these days), the arrangements might have been scuppered by emergency surgery 5 days before.
But I’d never seen Nick Lowe live, so having something to aim at aided the old recovery and 1st class rail from Somerset was painless (unlike 10 minutes in a black cab programmed to hit every pothole).
Allan’s review is spot on, it was a great night with a fine performer, a top notch band and the mighty Geraint – of whose solo work I knew little, but am taking steps to correct that oversight. I was completely exhausted, mind, and have since dropped a tenner or so on the 7″ vinyl limited edition of another set highlight, “Go ‘Way Hound Dog”.
Thirty minutes in – a word from Nick, “This is the point in the proceedings where I have to check if everything’s still going alright for everyone? OK? Yes? In that case it’s probably time to unwrap those sandwiches and get the thermos out. Is that a picnic rug I spy?” The man’s also a hoot.

Spot on, if unkind, as ever.

I can’t help feeling that as things Get Worse, we will be in for more of the loaves and the fishes.

If you must listen to covers only, have the good grace to listen to Seal’s new album Soul 2. Tooth – rottingly good. To think they pulled his cover of ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ because the X Factor Vibrato choir had just released it as a single, when Seal’s version was picking up radio plays all over. Go ‘Is It Just Me?’ Name names and Nail the bastards.
